Who uses our Forex API

Our currency rates are used for a variety of purposes

The Foreign Exchange (FX) market is open 24/5 and, according to the triennial report from the Bank for International Settlements, average daily Forex volume was more than $5.1 trillion, larger than the majority of global stock markets.

Unlike other global markets that trade through an exchange, the FX market is decentralised, or over-the-counter (OTC): trading is done directly between two parties who agree a price, without the supervision of an exchange. Because of this, it is vital for anyone who needs data to use a trusted source that is a true reflection of actual price action.

Organisations and individuals across many job functions need premium FX data. This guide identifies the right API endpoints and datasets depending on your job function and business need.

Accounting and finance

Because of worldwide and regional differences in regulatory standards, financial professionals and accountants use daily exchange rates for their day-to-day business functions. Our daily rates are processed from institutional providers, giving the most reliable and transparent data for accounting and finance.

Our clients trust the Forex API for financial reporting, invoicing, accounting, audit support and reconciling the company's books. Hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly averages are available from the historical endpoints, and support is available by live chat, email and phone.

Audit

An auditor's role is to make sure the information reported in financial statements is true and accurate, which often means scrutinising cross-border transactions. With deadlines to meet, our auditor clients need Forex data at any time of day, so our cloud-based solution is available 24/7 from any PC, laptop or mobile device.

Data can be downloaded in a customisable way so end-users can compare open, high, low, close and bid/ask quickly. Granular minute and tick rates are also available, giving a full turnkey data solution. This is why TraderMade is the preferred choice of CPAs and large audit firms.

Hedge funds and fintech

Hedge fund and fintech professionals use forex tick data to power big-data analysis for research and trading: high-frequency and algorithmic trading, back-testing models, charting applications, currency tickers, risk management, hedging and more.

Our API streams live tick data from multiple providers, giving an exact view of what is happening in the market. Our system handles millions of prices a day at ultra-low latency, and because we do not trade the markets there is no conflict of interest: we are purely a data company. Clients see support and resistance reaction points instantly, rather than through a staggered feed that updates every few seconds, and use the data to identify arbitrage opportunities and read market sentiment alongside hourly and daily requests.

Treasury

For treasury professionals, finding an appropriate source of currency rates can be difficult, especially for cross-border situations when managing financial risk. Core functions such as cash and liquidity management, risk management and corporate finance have grown more complex, and currency moves can trap cash in foreign currencies, so reliable and accurate forex data is essential.

Our rates are used for querying average exchange rates, live streaming rates and broken forward rate calculations. The time-slicing endpoints are especially favoured by treasurers for interrogation and price validation, and like auditors they need 24/7 access to data that is reliable and transparent.

Developers

In a fast-moving marketplace, retrieving current financial data from a reliable and secure source is imperative for building customer- and business-facing applications. We work with developers at ecommerce sites, banking providers and others who need live pricing injected into apps, pricing engines and websites.

For live streaming rates the API provides REST, WebSocket and FIX. The REST API returns JSON, XML and CSV. Our transparent, non-skewed data can be integrated into a wide range of infrastructure projects; see the developer documentation.

Product managers

Common use cases for product managers include live currency rates in products, apps and websites. The business case determines whether real-time or daily average rates fit best: a travel site converting prices in its pricing engine needs live data, while a financial site showcasing trends may want a less frequently updated price.

Localising prices into a customer's own currency gives an offering more credibility and trust, especially around online payments, and turns one-off customers into repeat ones. Product managers demand value for money and reliability from third-party services, and TraderMade provides a competitive, market-leading solution.

Frequently asked questions

A CFD is a Contract for Difference and relates closely to the underlying asset. Also considered a financial derivative, traders can speculate on the price of this asset by either going long (buy) or short (sell) and make money from either rising or falling markets.

The order flow in the Forex markets is the trades that have taken place between buyers and sellers of a currency pair. Participants can be large banks and financial institutions, central banks, portfolio managers and retail traders.

The SSI (Speculative Sentiment Index), sometimes known as the TSI (Trade Sentiment Index), is a tool used by traders in real time that compares how many buyers and sellers are active in the market at any given time. Positive ratios indicate more buyers than sellers, and negative ratios mean more sellers than buyers.

The closing price is the last traded price for a given timeframe, for example daily. The weekly closing price in the Forex markets is at 22:00 GMT on Friday and the opening price starts at 22:00 GMT on Sunday. The last traded rate can give an indication of market sentiment and is important for traders to understand.

Real-time market data shows the tick-by-tick updated price that trades within any market. It is used by traders who need instant information when making buy or sell decisions. This data is sub-second, and in busy market conditions hundreds of prices can trade each second.
